Objectum or Objectum Sexuality refers to the attraction (of any kind) to inanimate objects. Many objectum (OS) individuals even enter relationships with objects they are attracted to, and form close emotional bonds with them. To some, this can seem strange at first, but there are many different experiences covered by the objectum label including spiritual, mental, and others

Some objectum folks have spiritual beliefs, such as believing in animism, that contribute to their attraction. Animism is the belief that everything has a spiritual energy or a spirit, which makes objects a lot more animate than a non-believer in animism would see them. Some sources have also noted that a large amount of OS individuals are on the autism spectrum and/or have synesthesia. Neurodivergencies and experiences such as synesthesia can play a huge part in someone's ability to feel attraction to objects, form bonds with them, and be in a relationship with them

For objectum individuals, the objects they are attracted to (often referred to as beloved objects) frequently have names, identities, personalities, and many are viewed as having the ability to speak back to the individual in their own way. The object/s that they can be attracted to vary immensely and every OS individual will likely have a different experience with their orientation. The type of attraction felt, the object/s they experience attraction to, how they engage with those objects, and their relationship dynamics with them can all vary across the community!

and many more!

To answer the question of why objectum is different to paraphilia, we first need to define both terms

Objectum - 'the attraction to inanimate objects. This attraction can be sexual, romantic, or both, it can also be a form of tertiary attraction'
Paraphilia - 'any intense and persistent sexual interest other than sexual interest in genital stimulation or preparatory fondling with phenotypically normal, physically mature, consenting human partners.'

The first thing to unpack is how objectum can refer to many different kinds of attraction, not just sexual! As well as this, OS individuals usually hope to or aim to be in devoted relationships with their beloved object/s, where the attraction is reciprocated and mutual. Objectum individuals are primarily animists, neurodivergent, have synesthesia, and/or have other similar experiences - they experience object orientation. Some objectum folks do consider themselves paraphiliacs, more specifically objectophiles, and this is not a negative or bad thing.

Because of the relations to spiritual beliefs/experiences and neurodivergence, objectum becomes its own unique experience that is most often separate from paraphilia or the fetishization of objects. Whilst paraphilia should not be villainized, it is not the same as objectum and comparing it to objectum in this way misinforms people on what objectum is and what paraphilic attraction is

Is this objectophillia?

Whilst many pieces of media you'll see online use the term objectophilia alongside objectum sexuality or objectum, many OS folks find it misinforming! Objectum is not always a paraphilia and objectophile as a term shouldn't be forced onto any objectum folks, and it should only be used to describe actual objectophiles

Are objectum individuals LGBTQ+?

Objectum is not inherently LGBTQ+ by definition, it's just an experience that differs from the norm! Depending on if their beloved object has a gender, some objectum folks may consider themselves not straight, some that experience exclusive attraction to objects also may consider themselves aroace towards humans or similar, but objectum by itself is not LGBTQ+

Isn't objectum just something people identify as online?

No - objectum existed far before it became known more online! There's actually lots of info about objectum and it's been researched for a long time! Not many sources are 100% accurate due to the general stigma surrounding objectum attraction, but the amount of articles you find talking about it is pretty interesting for an identity that gets so little recognition outside of MOGAI communities

What if I just don't believe what objectum animists believe?

It's okay to not believe in animism, it isn't bad to not have a belief as we see it all around us! What it isn't okay to do is invalidate that belief or call someone's experiences with that belief, fake or not real! You can not believe in a certain concept without invalidating that belief, and something can be true for another in the same way that it isn't true for you

What's the difference between this, fictosexual, and conceptum?

Objectum is the attraction to objects, ficto- is the attraction to fictional characters (fictosexual is the sexual attraction counterpart), and conceptum is the attraction to concepts, representations of a concept, and other possible variations

So all they do is have sex with objects?

No! This is a common and harmful belief about OS folks! Not only is objectum often referring to non-sexual attraction, objectum folks who do experience sexual attraction are no less valid than the average non-objectum person. I'm not going to turn to someone and say 'so all you do is have sex with humans?'
